June 20th 2016 was International Surfing Day and the event organised by Ocean Dimensions at Six Senses Laamu was certainly international. Surfers from eight countries took part in the celebrations and enjoyed the Hulimendhoo Break.

International Surfing Day was launched in 2004 by The Surfrider Foundation and the Surfing Magazine and since then yearly celebrations have taken place in over 30 countries including Maldives. The celebrations are not only about surfing but also focus on the fragility of our oceans and aim to raise awareness of issues surrounding sustainability of ocean resources.

This year, participants from Australia, Canada, Germany, U.K., Greece, Japan, Maldives and New Zealand enjoyed a 2 hour surf session at Hulimendhoo Break. Although you can see Six Senses Laamu from the wave, it’s a little too far for paddling out so a Dhoni transported the surfers and paparazzi. Surfers then paddled together and held hands in a circle while Instructor David did a speech about being grateful for our oceans. Then the action began, great waves, sun in the sky, warm, clear water and no crowds – it doesn’t get much better than this!

Snacks and drinks rounded off a successful and enjoyable surfing celebration at Six Senses Laamu.
