Turtle nests at Six Senses Laamu, Maldives
As of August 2017, Ocean Dimensions are now diving & snorkelling in the Unesco Biosphere Reserve in the Baa Atoll at Kihaa Maldives – the closest resort to Hanifaru Bay. We hope to see you there!
Currently we have six turtle nests on the island which are expected to hatch this December and January 2017! For the past few years we always had turtles come up the beach to dig their nests and lay their eggs in the months of May and June. Hatching occurred about 2 months later which was then in the months of July and August. This year was no exception, we were just a little surprised that we had only very few nests compared to the last few years. Now we know why, some of the turtles were just a little delayed. For the first time since 2011 we have turtles laying their eggs towards the end of the year. Sunday 27.11.16 at about 10:00 o’clock 13 baby turtles hatched and late in the morning on 29.11.16 around 70 baby turtles hatched near villa 92. The timings are also a little unusual as the babies normally hatch during night time hours. Guests of Six Senses Laamu can sign up to get a call any time during the day or night when a hatching occurs so they can be part of this rare miracle of nature and watch how tiny little baby turtles dig their way to the surface of the nest, their front flippers moving non-stop and crawl down the beach to the waters edge were they hit the water for the first time.
