Water is transparent – right?

Why, if water is transparent, do we see these beautiful blues in the Maldives and of course in any other ocean in the world?
The answer lies in the fascinating interplay of light and water molecules. When sunlight penetrates the ocean’s surface, it is composed of various colors, each with its own wavelength. These colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet are part of the visible spectrum.
Water molecules absorb light differently depending on its wavelength. The longer wavelengths, like red, orange, and yellow, are absorbed more readily by water molecules. They also dissipate quickly as they penetrate the ocean’s surface. This leaves behind the shorter wavelengths, particularly blue and violet, which are scattered and reflected throughout the water column.
As sunlight travels through the ocean, it collides with water molecules and particles suspended in the water. These collisions cause the shorter blue wavelengths to scatter in all directions, giving the water its characteristic blue hue.
The depth of the ocean also plays role in intensifying the blue color. In shallow waters, where sunlight can penetrate deeply, the blue hues are more vibrant due to the increased scattering of light. In deeper waters, where sunlight is limited, the blue color appears darker.
The mesmerizing blue color of the ocean is a result of the intricate dance between light and water molecules. Through the processes of scattering and absorption, the seemingly transparent water transforms into a canvas of vibrant blue hues.
