Strong currents

and colorful dives

Favourite Dive site for January

Kihadhuffaru Baa

Baa atoll offers so many great dives that it is already April and we have not yet revealed our favourite dive site for January.

In the Maldives, January is generally known for strong currents and here in Baa atoll was not different. We actually enjoyed it while it lasted and had a lot of fun drifting past our long thilas. We had to choose our dive sites according to the currents and only selected reefs where the topography suited drift dives. This also made our current checks much easier. If there is only a little current it is sometimes more difficult to detect exactly which direction it is going. When you jump into the water with a stronger current you straight away know where the “wind” is blowing from.

To get to the point, our favourite dive site in January was Kihaadhuffaru Thila in combination with the Rocks. The separate blocks and overhangs causes some interesting whirlies. Add the stronger currents and the beautiful soft corals were in full bloom. We had some truly amazing dives, full of colors and action. If you are reading this and have never dived in a current before, not to worry, we can teach you and start with some dive sites that are a little more protected. It is also a good opportunity to do a drift dive as part of the PADI Advanced Open Water course. Did you get interested and want to know more? You can find more information about this course here.
